Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood

Upper Beachwood Canyon is home to one the original Hollywood Hills luxury neighborhoods, Hollywoodland (1923). In fact, the Hollywood Sign was a bulb-lit real estate advertisement promoting the subdivision with the full name: HOLLYWOODLAND. The letters L-A-N-D were removed in later years during repair work. In fact, the once-wooden real estate sign (replaced with sturdier metal letters which are obviously not prone to rot and decay) was only meant as a temporary marker.

The entrance to Hollywoodland is marked by two stone towers at The Village (a.k.a. Beachwood Village) which is home to several small mom ‘n pops businesses including two anchor tenants: Beachwood Market and Beachwood Café. The area from The Village down to Franklin Avenue is Lower Beachwood Canyon which is comprised of single-family homes and apartment buildings. Beachwood Drive is the main neighborhood thoroughfare.

Nature lovers feel at home in Beachwood Canyon for a few reasons. It abuts Griffith Park, Lake Hollywood Park, and the Hollywood Reservoir giving locals quick access to hiking trails, open spaces, and gorgeous views of Downtown Los Angeles and the L.A. Basin. Horseback tours of Griffith Park start as Sunset Ranch which sits at the terminus of Beachwood Drive.

Years of tree planting and landscaping have made Beachwood Canyon a verdant oasis. Spotting wild animals is a common, if not daily experience if you live in certain parts of the neighborhood.

Beachwood Canyon Real Estate Information

The earliest homes in Hollywoodland were built in the 1920s and their architectural styles reflect the period. Home shoppers will find French, Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival homes. In Lower Beachwood Canyon (and throughout the Hollywood area), popular styles of the earliest homes include Bungalow and Craftsman.

In the Postwar period, architectural trends shifted to Mid-Century Modern and California Modern. Later, Contemporary homes appeared on the scene, including stilt homes that jut out over the hillsides and are no longer permitted.

Architecture connoisseurs will be pleased to learn that there are a few esoteric architectural designs represented here. Beachwood Canyon is home to a Geodesic Dome, Triponent House, designed by Bernard Judge (1962). It is one of several Case Study Houses in the Hollywood Hills. A few Storybook houses also dot the Upper Beachwood Canyon area. What's more, the neighborhood has a few Castles!
