Bel Air Estates Information
The Bel Air Estates enclave is the first subdivision of what is now the larger Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. It sits just north of Sunset Boulevard, sandwiched between Bel Air Country Club and North Beverly Glen Boulevard. It was founded in 1923 under the original name Bel Air Estates Residential Planning District.
The original Bel Air Estates subdivision, as developed by Alphonzo E. Bell, contained 128 large lots right off Bel Air road. Many lots since then have been combined with others to form mega lots. The typical home here is an estate with a gated entry and hedges for privacy. Sprawling grounds, tennis courts, pools, and fountains are the norm. Architecturally speaking, mansions in Bel Air Estates vary but French, Mediterranean, Modern, and Spanish styles are prevalent.
Over the years, Bel Air has grown considerably with the addition of several newer subdivisions. Now, locals typically refer to the wider Bel Air neighborhood in three major sections.
- The original Bel Air Estates is now referred to as East Gate Bel Air or Old Bel Air and the entrance is at Sunset and South Beverly Glen.
- West Gate Bel Air is the area north of Sunset Boulevard between Bellagio Road and the 405 Freeway. The entrance is at Sunset and Bellagio Road.
- Upper Bel Air refers to everything north of West Gate and East Gate up to Mulholland Drive.
