About Miracle Mile

Miracle Mile area is located within the 90019 zip code and is bordered by Park La Brea to the north, Cathay Circle to the west, Dockweiler to the south, and Hancock Park to the east.

The area's development was shaped in large part during the 1920's by AW Ross, who envisioned a strip of Wilshire Boulevard as a commercial district to rival Downtown Los Angeles. At the time, the portion of Wilshire Boulevard that would become the Miracle Mile was an unpaved farm road cutting through bean fields and dairy farms. The nearby Fairfax District was already populated by a Jewish population that had been faced with housing restrictions downtown and in some of early Los Angeles's upscale such as Bel Air.

AW Ross's development of his commercial strip along Wilshire was revolutionary because it was designed exclusively for automotive traffic rather than pedestrian traffic. Ross applied this design principle to both the street and the buildings built along it. A couple of innovations seen along Wilshire Boulevard were dedicated left-turn lanes and timed traffic signals, the first in place within the United States. Flow of traffic was further aided due to Ross requiring all buildings to include parking lots for their customers. Ross further shaped the area's aesthetic by requiring building facades be oriented toward Wilshire Boulevard and best be seen through a windshield, with all architectural details visible at 30 miles per hour.

Driven by Ross's requirements, the buildings along Wilshire Boulevard contributed to both the Streamline Moderne and Art Deco movements of architecture. Ross's invention of the car-oriented urban form not only contributed to Los Angeles's reputation for being dominated by the car, it led to declining real estate prices in downtown Los Angeles and initiated the development of the multiple downtowns which characterize Los Angeles to this day.

Today, the Miracle Mile neighborhood is among the densest in Los Angeles and is well-serviced by public transportation including subway service on Metro's Purple Line.
