Homes for Sale in Venice Canals
Search all Venice Canals houses for sale and real estate listings. The Venice Canals are a human-made waterway excavated in 1905 by Abbot Kinney, a developer and conservationist who sought to create a replica of Venice, Italy.
The original interwoven canals included three miles of waterways, covering a large portion of the Venice neighborhood. Motorboats, canoes, and gondolas ferried tourists to-and-from amusement rides and other attractions. Today, the Venice Canal Historic District is much smaller (six waterways) but no less charming than the original. Venice Canals Info
Beautiful homes and narrow sidewalks line the canals to form the most unique neighborhood in Los Angeles, if not the United States. Cars and pedestrians cross the canals via arched bridges. Most bridges are dual-use, but there are a couple of pedestrian-only crossings, too. Some original bungalows still stand, but over the years, the majority have been razed and replaced by much larger Contemporary and Modern homes.
Residents and friends of the neighborhood put on an annual holiday boat parade each December with decorated watercraft and bands performing from floating decks. Residents can tie up or dock their canoes, paddleboards, rafts, kayaks, and dinghies. Water for the canals is periodically refreshed with seawater from nearby Marina Del Rey.
The area gets heavy traffic on weekends as tourists flock to the nearby Venice Boardwalk, Muscle Beach, Windward Circle, and the trendy boutiques and restaurants along Abbot Kinney Boulevard.
